These day’s when collectors talk about “blue chip” “investment grade” watches, the Rolex Paul Newman Daytona. We would argue that vintage Daytona is well past it’s peak. The REAL blue chips in watch collecting are the Rolex triple-calendar ref 8171 and ref 6062.
Produced 1949-1952, the total production of both models is estimated at 2,600 in total. About a dozen are on the market at any time, and 3-4 pieces come to auction every year. For investment minded collectors this is the sweet spot: small enough population that they are extremely rare (especially after 70 years) – but just big enough for “price discovery” and a market to develop.
Rolex 8171
The 8171 has timeless design, classic proportions, and is sheer elegance. At 38mm it is also meets the needs of younger collectors who prefer “modern” (larger) sizes. Produced in 1949-1952 in steel, yellow gold, and pink gold. Prices start around $100,000, and can vary by orders of magnitude depending on condition and metal. Highest price at auction was $1,140,000 in 2013 at Christie’s for a steel case with diamond indexes.Rolex ref 8171 SOLD: € 429,000 Monaco Legends auction April 2024Rolex 8171 Collector: watchguru_Rolex 8171 in steel Collector: @lemusclocksRolex 8171 in steel with diamond markers. Rolex 6062
The Rolex 6062 produced 1950-1952 has the familiar look of the contemporary Rolex oyster case in 36mm. The variant with little stars for hour markers is nicknamed “stelline” (Italian for small stars), and has a true vintage charm.
What make the Rolex 6062 historically important is this triple-calendar complication paired with the modern waterproof Oyster case. When introduced, this was a sports watch with high-complication. The grandfather of the modern Rolex Sky Dweller. Frankly, this is a far important watch than a Paul Newman Daytona.
Prices start around $250,000 examples in good condition are north of $500,000+, and can easily pass $1 million. Especially desirable is the black dial variant. The top price was $5,060,427 for the black dial “Bai Dai” at Phillips Geneva 2017, owned by the last emperor of Vietnam.Rolex 6062 in pink-gold with the best 3-6-9 explorer dial.
